Remembering Memorial Day
Memorial Day (or Decoration Day as it was originally called) is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. While the origin of the tradition of decorating graves with flags is disputed, Waterloo, New York was officially declared as the birthplace of Memorial Day in May of 1966 by President Lyndon Johnson. Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 and was first observed on May 30th when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the "National Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans "To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to "Taps."
Memorial Day was made into a three-day weekend with the National Holiday Act of 1971, which makes it a floating holiday that moves to “the last Monday in May”. Many veterans feel it makes it all the easier for people to be distracted from the spirit and meaning of the day. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) mentioned this in its 2002 Memorial Day address: "Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed greatly to the general public's nonchalant observance of Memorial Day."
I myself came from a military family. My father served for 26 years in the Army’s 7th Calvary Division with one tour in the Korean Conflict and two tours in Vietnam. I and my two brothers served a combined 14 years in the Navy and one of my sisters also spent 5 years in the Army. I am very fortunate and thankful to have all of my family returned safe and unharmed, but many Americans are less fortunate. So when you are enjoying yourself this year with family and friends, take a moment and give a prayer or thought to those that have gone before us and will not be returning. My brothers/sisters-in-arms.
